We are visiting from out of town and were looking to have some Mexican food, so we went to the Rio Grande Mexican restaurant located in Hillsville, Virginia. My wife and I are so impressed. The portion sizes and the food were outstanding, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very warm, cozy, and inviting. But the star of the show was our waitress, Martha Marquez. She met us with a smile right away, immediately got our appetizers and drinks, and was very patient as we tried to figure out what we wanted from the extensive menu. Martha was outstanding; she was a true professional with a beautiful personality. We highly recommend this place, and if you are lucky enough to get Martha as your server, you have a winner. Women's restroom by the bar had no soap. It took a few minutes to get sat (11:45 lunch on Saturday). Chips and salsa came out quickly, but took probably 5 minutes to get greeted by server. Chips and salsa were very flavorful and fresh. Prices were very reasonable. We had to hunt down our server to get our check. I had the fajita taco salad which was fresh fried tortilla and full of sautéed chicken, green peppers, onion, lettuce, beans, queso, tomatoes, and sour cream.

Service less than expected but overall not bad. Had to flag down waiter to order a 2nd round and he brought the check before we were even close to finished. Other than that it went well. Its basic Mexican restaurant, the food was perfect, I would say top 3 of mex. Rest. I have been too. Fro. The chips being fresh and crisp to the thick chunky salsa, all way to the perfectly cooked carne asade. Overall it would be top 3 of Mexican restaurants I have been too. And maybe if we had dif server it would have been 1. But still highly recommend. P.S. if you do drink be sure to have driver bc the police patrol frequently bc of the bar next door.

It’s been a while since I ate at Rio Grande Mexican Grill because of my commute change. I was here today because this girl needed a drink! I had the pleasure to have Sara as my bartender tonight, I had no idea of what to drink and it was like she read my mind, she also offered something to eat, napkins, she was on TOP of her game! Which, as an introvert, I really appreciate. The whole staff is always so friendly, polite, kind, hardworkers, I always see how good they CLEAN the restaurant, and they always make me smile. But I got the biggest smile from the amazing service from Sara today, the chat with don José, and those PERFECT tacos al pastor that made me question why I ever even stopped coming to this place regularly. Thank you for all you do. You are noticed!

Strip mall delight. The table salsa was tasty. Not spicy, but seasoned well. I had the best vegetable fajitas of my life. Piping hot, charred perfectly, spiced well and huge. All for only $9.50. You didn’t read that wrong! My husband and I were joking that this same meal in Cary would be double the price, and not even close to as good. The house made sangria was also delicious. It’s just a short drive from Galax if you’re in that area.

Traveling through the Blue Ridge Parkway this week and spending the night in town. Found this little gem and was blown away by the food, service and atmosphere! Highly recommend eating here on your stay!!
